the front entrance of a school building

Richardson Elementary, located on a 20-acre site at 800 NE Blackwell Road, Richardson Elementary School opened its doors on September 7, 1993.

The school is school located on the east side of Lee’s Summit in close proximity to Legacy Park Community Center and Great Beginnings Early Childhood Center. The building is 71,718 square feet and includes a 10,000 foot basement. Richardson sits on land which was once part of a 250-acre farm owned by Noel and Eileen Richardson. Mr. and Mrs. Richardson sold a portion of this farm to the R-7 School District in 1989. The school was built as part of two R-7 voter-approved bond issues: the first phase was built at a cost of 4.3 million and was part of a 22 million bond issue approved by voters in April 1989. The issue also included Underwood Elementary, Campbell Middle School and the first phase of Trailridge. The second phase of Richardson was funded by a February 1993 bond issue which totaled $24 million. This issue also funded the second phase of Trailridge, the first phase of Lee’s Summit North High School, renovation of Lee’s Summit High School and additional instructional technology. In 1993, Richardson Elementary students participated in selecting the new school’s colors and mascot. The students voted and chose the roadrunner and black, red and white as the school colors. The Home of the Roadrunners was named after Mr. & Mrs. Richardson.

Richardson also includes art, music, physical education classrooms, AIM/Aspire and special education classrooms. Students have the opportunity to develop leadership skills by participating in Student Council, Books and Breakfast, Honors Choir, HERO Ambassadors and Energy Hounds among others.

The Richardson Elementary PTA continues to actively support the students and staff through a variety of programs, activities and fundraising. Yearly highlights that are sponsored by the PTA include: Muffins with Mom, Donuts with Dad, Watch Dog Program, the school carnival and the annual spirit week.

It’s a great day to be a Richardson Roadrunner!
